It was a battle of the top two teams in the WHAC on Saturday (Oct. 5) at the AQ Athletic Field, as Aquinas was unable to complete a comeback and overcome an early 2-0 deficit against #3 UNOH. The Racers scored twice in the first 24 minutes before AQ cut the deficit in half early in the second stanza, though a Saints own goal in the final minutes accounted for the final 3-1 tally.
In the league's preseason poll, UNOH was selected to win the WHAC regular season title, while Aquinas was chosen as conference runner-up. The Racers' win on Saturday pushes them to 9-1 overall and 4-0 in WHAC play, while AQ falls to 7-2-1 on the season and 2-1 in conference action. Aquinas' lone defeats this year are to #2 Keiser and #3 UNOH.
The Racers struck quickly on Saturday afternoon, as Viviana Mirales took a nice feed from Dana Schueller and scored just 32 seconds into the contest for an early 1-0 lead. UNOH doubled its advantage with a goal at the 23:36 mark, as Julie Cazanave notched a tally off a Kate Agyemang pass to give the visitors the 2-0 advantage.
Aside from the score, the first half was evenly played. UNOH held a slim 8-6 edge in shots, but Aquinas led 4-1 in corner kicks.
Things would get interesting early in the second half, as the Saints scored in the opening 10 seconds on a Hannah Crum tally, cutting the deficit in half at 2-1. It would remain a one-goal game for the next 42 minutes until UNOH moved ahead 3-1 off an own goal, as a ball was played into the box, deflected a few times, and kicked into the goal by an AQ player.
The own goal came at the 87:32 mark and essentially ended the Saints' chances at tying the game and forcing overtime.
UNOH finished the game with a 19-12 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in corners. There were 19 fouls called in the contest, with 10 fouls on AQ and nine on the Racers.
Braeleigh McCoy notched eight saves in defeat, while Crum took a team-high four shots along with her goal. Madison Mohr tallied three shots on goal and Raegan Radaz attempted a pair of shots.
AQ heads on the road for its next two contests, traveling to Lawrence Tech on Wednesday (Oct. 9) for a 7:30 p.m. contest with the Blue Devils in Southfield.
