The Aquinas women's volleyball team continued its strong play, earning its third sweep in the last four matches, as AQ topped Lourdes by a 3-0 score on Saturday (Oct. 5) in the Sturrus Center. After gutting out a tough five-set win over Siena Heights on Friday night (Oct. 4), the Saints responded with one of their best efforts recently, topping the Gray Wolves by scores of 25-22, 25-18, and 25-12.
AQ's fourth win in a row pushes the Saints back to the .500 mark overall at 9-9, while Aquinas moves to 6-3 in WHAC play and a tie for third place in the league standings. Lourdes dips to 8-9 on the year; the Gray Wolves are 5-4 in conference action.
The victory caps a 3-0 homestand for Aquinas, which included the 3-2 win over Siena Heights on Friday and the Wednesday night (Oct. 2) sweep of UM-Dearborn. AQ is now 6-4 on the year and has five sweeps on the season.
With a .306 team hitting percentage, Aquinas dominated to the tune of 39 kills and just 13 errors. The AQ defense held Lourdes to a .070 attack clip and just 29 kills against 22 errors. The Saints also led in assists (39-28), digs (43-31), and aces (5-1), while the Gray Wolves were on top in blocks, 6-4.
Jackie Rozell powered the Saints with a match-best 12 kills, while adding three total blocks. Kylie Christensen hit .571 on Saturday, with nine kills and just one error in 14 attempts. Maddie Ingraham was nearly as impressive and efficient, hitting .538 and putting away eight kills and only one error in 13 attacks.
Payton Klein notched six kills, five digs, and an ace, while Meredith Kraus provided five digs, three kills, and a block. Olivia Martinelli and Kenzie Sanders each served a pair of aces in the win.
Kali Crawford passed for 37 assists and Karly Morris picked up a team-high 10 digs.
The Saints play just once next week, as Aquinas travels to Madonna for a crucial match on Wednesday (Oct. 9) at 7:00 p.m. Madonna (6-2 WHAC) plays at Concordia on Saturday night, but currently sits just one loss ahead of AQ in the conference standings.
