Men's Hockey Powers Past Rochester

Box Score The men's hockey team extended its winning streak to four games with a commanding 13-4 victory over Rochester this afternoon. The Saints swept the weekend series with the Warriors 19-6. With the win, Aquinas improves to 6-8 on the season and 2-6 in WHAC play. Its the first time the Saints have reached double-digits on the scoreboard since a ten-goal outburst against Davenport in December 2018, and the most goals in a single game since the Saints put up 13 on Central Michigan in a 13-2 win in February of 2017.

For the second-straight night the Saints opened the scoring with an early power-play goal. Darren Johnson beat the Warrior goaltender at the 15:51 mark in the first to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Kyle Truax and Mason Stewart had assists on the play. The Saints made it 2-0 with an even-strength goal by Nick Long at 7:27. Aquinas extended the lead to 3-0 early in the second-period when Russell Shengulette lit the lamp with assists from Ryan Wolfe and Connor Barta.

Rochester closed the gap to 3-1 with a power-play goal at 11:26 in the second, but Alex Klekotka countered with a goal on the man-advantage for the Saints to make it 4-1. Brandon Rozema and Steven Nisbet had the helpers on Klekotka's goal at 8:43. Rochester struck back just seconds later to close the gap again to just two at 4-2, but that would be the closest the Warriors would get the rest of the contest. Steven Gustafson added a power-play goal, the Saints' third of the game, with assists to Truax and Rozema. Greg McQuade made it 6-2 just over a minute later on an even-strength goal from Darren Johnson. Rochester closed the period with another power-play goal to make it 6-3 after two.

The Warriors scored early in the third to make it 6-4, but from there it was all Saints the rest of the way. Brandon Rozema got himself on the scoreboard with a power-play goal with helpers from Klekotka and Gustafson. Darren Johnson made it 8-4 mindway through the period, and the Saints added two more power-play goals within 28 seconds of each other to blow the game wide open. The first, at 6:43 in the third, as by Nick Long with Truax and Gustafson on the assists, while the second was scored by Klekotka with Gustafson again on the assist. Aquinas tacked on three more power-play goals over the last three minutes of action, two by Steven Gustafson and another by Darren Johnson.

Seven different Saints scored on the day, with two goal games from Long and Klekotka and  hat-tricks by Darren Johnson and Steven Gustafson. Truax, Rozema and Gustafson each dished out three assists on the afternoon, with Klekotka, Stewart and Trent Kulczyk each handing out two of their own. On the day, the Saints scored nine power-play goals, converting over half of their 16 attempts on the man-advantage.

The Saints will look to continue their winning streak with a pair of games against WHAC foes Concordia next weekend.
