Saints Beat Cleary, 2-0, Clinch Playoff Berth with Senior Day Win

Team Will Be Either #5 or #6 Seed in the WHAC Quarterfinals

The Saints men's soccer team concluded the regular season with a 2-0 win against Cleary on Senior Day Saturday to clinch a spot in the WHAC Championship Quarterfinals.
 
AQ finishes the regular season with a 5-7-6 overall record and a WHAC record of 4-4-3. The first season for head coach Luke Ruff saw the team improve its record from 1-16 a year ago. The team finished fifth in the WHAC and will face #4 seeded Lawrence Tech in the quarterfinals. Cleary with the loss finishes the season with a 6-7-2 overall record and a record of 4-5-2 in the WHAC.
 
In the first half, the Cougars had an early chance on goal but Goalkeeper Antonio Strassioto saved the shot. The Saints had a corner kick in the 25th minute that set up a goal in the box from Jake Ireland with assists from Jai Tahlan and Franco Calabrese. Jackson Moore scored in the 36th minute on a drive in the box in open play to give AQ a 2-0 lead that they held at the half. Ghiggini assisted the second goal.
 
The second half did not feature many chances but the Saints held on for the victory through an organized defensive effort. The Cougars did not have many clear chances while the Saints got a few shots on target to close out the game.
 
AQ led the game in shots and shots on target. Aquinas had 24 total shots compared with 12 for Cleary in addition to 12 on goal for AQ as opposed to four for the Cougars. The Saints had ten corner kicks while Cleary took three.
 
Moore was the team leader in shots as well as shots on goal with six total shots and four shots on target. Alberto Teatin shot the ball five times with three of his shots going on net. Ireland had four total shots while Calabrese, Tahlan and Mohammed Mustapha had two. Strassiotto made four saves in the win.
