AQ Drops 78-70 Final to IU-East in Overtime

Saints held a 57-32 rebounding advantage, led by Camaryia Williams' 14 boards

The Aquinas women's basketball team was unable to finish off IU-East on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 2) in Richmond, Ind., as the Red Wolves hit a game-tying buzzer beater to force overtime and outscored the Saints 16-8 in the extra session. IU-East escaped with the 78-70 overtime victory against AQ in a game in which the Saints held an 18-point advantage late in the third quarter.

In the true road game, Aquinas outscored IU-East in each of the first three quarters, but the Red Wolves mounted a furious 23-8 comeback over the final 10 minutes to send the game to overtime at 62-all. In the five-minute overtime period, IU-East scored the first seven points and finished off the Saints in a wild non-conference contest.

IU-East is now 1-1 on the season, while Aquinas drops to 1-3 on the year.

AQ shot 33.3 percent from the field, including a 4-for-14 mark from three-point range. The Saints went 18-of-29 at the line, while IU-East made 17-of-22 freebies. Overall, the Red Wolves shot 42.9 percent from the floor, but were just 7-of-28 from long distance.

Three Saints reached double-digits on Saturday, including one double-double performance and nearly a second such effort. Diynasti Dowell recorded a team-high 15 points, made all four free throws, and grabbed five boards. Camaryia Williams pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds (seven offensive, seven defensive) and scored 10 points, to go with six steals and three assists.

Marissa Brady played 20 minutes off the bench and tallied 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting and five rebounds, while Ally Frederickson posted 12 rebounds and added eight points and three assists.

Jaylynn Williams, Jordyn Wigg, and Destini Lewis each scored six points. Brighton Miller scored five points and Keeley Hinton added four points and four rebounds.

Aquinas held a huge 57-32 rebounding margin, including a 25-6 advantage on the offensive glass. The Saints turned that into a large 29-1 edge in second chance points, while also maintaining a 42-6 bench point advantage. AQ also was on top in points off turnovers (20-12), while IU-East led in the paint, 34-32.

The Saints got off to a good start, leading 13-10 at the end of the first quarter and taking a 36-23 cushion to halftime. AQ kept a double-digit advantage the entire third quarter, capping off at a 54-36 lead in the final minute of the period.

IU-East, however, put together a wild comeback over the final 10 minutes and used an out-of-bounds play to hit a free-throw line jumper as the fourth quarter buzzer sounded, sending the game to overtime tied at 62-62.

The Red Wolves scored the first seven points in OT and Aquinas could get no closer than five points the rest of the contest.

AQ will be back in action next Saturday (Nov. 9) at 5:00 p.m., when the Saints host IU-Northwest before beginning WHAC play the following Saturday (Nov. 16) against Madonna.
