Saints Hold Off Lourdes at Home, 43-40

Team Improves to 3-0 in WHAC Play

AQ returned home on Saturday (Nov. 23) and defeated Lourdes by a score of 43-40. The Saints led for most of the game and held off a comeback attempt by Lourdes in the fourth quarter.
 
It was a great defensive effort for Aquinas as the team only gave up 15 points in the first half including five in the first quarter. The Saints outscored Lourdes in the first quarter 16-5 and 22-15 in the first half as the team improved to 5-4 overall and 3-0 in WHAC play. Lourdes fell to 2-7 overall and 1-3 in the WHAC.
 
The Saints held the Gray Wolves to 13-of-63 (20.6 percent) shooting from the field for the game including 5-of-30 in the first half and 8-of-33 in the second half. This includes holding Lourdes to 3-of-27 shooting from three-point range as the Gray Wolves went 2-of-16 in the first half and 1-of-11 in the second half.
 
AQ shot 15-of-48 in the game (31.3 percent) and was 2-of-16 from three-point range. Camaryia Williams had 16 rebounds including 13 defensive rebounds to lead all players in the game. She scored six points on 2-of-5 shooting and contributed three assists and a steal. 
 
Marissa Brady and Jaylynn Williams were the leading scorers for the team with 14 points. Brady was 6-of-12 from the field with eight rebounds and a blocked shot while Williams also went 6-of-12 shooting including 2-of-6 from three-point range. Williams also had three rebounds. 
 
JaKarri Alven scored six points on 1-of-5 from the field while shooting 4-of-6 from the free throw line and contributing two rebounds and an assist.
 
Jayda Smith added four assists to lead the Saints while Daz'Sha Day had three rebounds and an assist. Kailee Ford, Brionne Crews, Jordyn Wigg and Destini Lewis each had a steal for AQ defensively.
 
The Saints led 34-23 entering the fourth quarter when Lourdes went on a 14-6 run to shrink the AQ lead to 40-37 at the 1:48 mark. Aquinas forced three missed shots in the final two minutes to allow the Saints to close out the game at the free throw line courtesy of clutch shots by Smith and Day.
 
Day's free throws came after Logan Ingram of Lourdes made a long three pointer to cut the Saints lead to one. Riley Raburn missed a potential game tying three-pointer with five seconds left; Camaryia Williams grabbed the rebound and the Saints held on for a 43-40 victory.
 
AQ led in rebounding with a 50-40 edge over the Gray Wolves including a 37-25 advantage on the defensive glass. The Saints led in points in the paint by a 20-12 margin.  
 
AQ next plays on Wednesday, December 4th when the team heads to Adrian, Michigan to take on Siena Heights at 5:30 PM.
