The women's soccer team took on #6 ranked and regional #1 seed Central Methodist this afternoon for a spot in the NAIA Women's Soccer National Tournament Final Site, but came up short against the Eagles, 5-1. The loss concludes the Saints' season in the National Tournament for the second straight season and ends the season with a 18-4-1 mark. The 18 wins are a new single-season school record for the Saints.
The Saints played the Eagles tight throughout the first-half, creating some chances on the counter-attack, but were unable to solve the Eagle defense for a goal. CMU took a 1-0 lead 30 minutes into the first-half, and while the Saints kept pace and battled their hosts to close the half, the score remained 1-0 in favor of the Eagles at the break.
Unfortunately for the Saints, the Eagles took total control early in the second-half, adding goals in the 55th, 61st and 68th minutes to take a 4-0 lead. CMU would tack on one more goal in the 73rd to make the score 5-0. The Saints got themselves on the scoreboard late, with
Abby Frankhouse finding the back of the net for her sixth goal of the year.
Hannah Crum had the assist on Frankhouse's goal, crossing a pass to the back post to an open Frankhouse to convert.Â
Aquinas finished the day with more corner-kicks earned (3 to 1) and more saves (four by Braeliegh McCoy), but were outshot by CMU by a 15-6 margin.Â
