The men's hockey team fought back to cut a Lawrence Tech lead to just one late, but were unable to complete a comeback and defeat the Blue Devils. The loss drops the Saints to 2-8 on the season and 0-6 in WHAC play.
For the second straight night the two teams played a scoreless first-period, though the Saints dominated a lot of play in the first 20 minutes, outshooting Lawrence Tech 19-6 in the first period. The Saints opened the scoring four minutes into the second with goal by
Trent Kulczyk off of a slick pass from
Kyle Truax. Unfortunately, the Blue Devils tied things up just moments later to make the score 1-1. Despite continuing to be outshot by the host Saints, Lawrence Tech took control of the game midway through the second, scoring a pair of goals to take a 3-1 lead. The second goal came on a Blue Devil power play at 14:37 in the period.
The Saints battled throughout the third-period, furiously trying to tie things up to take the game to overtime for the second straight day. Blue Devil goaltender Christian Kazoleas was up to the task all night long, making 39 saves and keeping the Saints at bay despite consistant offensive pressure from AQ.
Nick Stockert was able to solve Kazoleas at the 17:27 mark with an assist by
Ryan Wolfe to cut the deficit to 3-2. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Saints could get despite a late power-play and extra man advantage and the Blue Devils swept the weekend series.
Aquinas outshot the Blue Devils 41-25 on the night. The Saints were whistled for 17 penalties for 45 minutes while the Blue Devils were dinged for 11 for 22. Each team had one power-play goal on the night.
The Saints will take on Cleary University this weekend with a pair of non-WHAC games. Aquinas hosts the Cougars on Friday night at 8:00 pm.
