AQ Clinches Second Place With Senior Day Sweep of Madonna

Saints earn 11th sweep of the season over previously second-place Crusaders

The Aquinas women's volleyball team put together one of its best performances of the season, as the Saints made quick work of visiting Madonna in Saturday afternoon's (Nov. 9) regular season finale. In a matchup of two of the top teams in the WHAC, AQ posted straight set wins of 25-9, 25-14, and 25-21 to move ahead of Madonna in the league standings and send its seniors out in style on Senior Day.

Heading into the match, Madonna was in second place in the conference standings, while Aquinas was in a tie for third place with UNOH. With AQ's victory over Madonna and UNOH's loss to Lourdes, the Saints clinched second place in the final regular season standings.

Overall, Aquinas improves to 17-12, while Madonna dips to 22-11. Both teams are 14-6 in WHAC play, but the Saints hold the tiebreaker with the three-set victory on Saturday; in the previous meeting between the schools, it took five sets for Madonna to defeat Aquinas, doing so on Oct. 9 in Livonia.

It was one of AQ's top offensive outings of the year, as the home Saints hit .356 with 47 kills and only 10 errors. On the other side, Aquinas limited the Crusaders to a .074 attack mark, 26 kills, and 18 errors. The Saints also held large advantages in assists (45-24), digs (56-41), total blocks (9-4), and aces (5-1).

Aquinas hit an outstanding .448 (15 kills, two errors) in set one and posted a .406 hitting percentage (also 15 kills, two errors) in the third set to cruise to its 11th sweep of the year.

Jackie Rozell put down a match-high 16 kills and hit .406, along with three block assists and a pair of digs. Kylie Christensen notched 11 kills and just one error for a .500 attack clip, delivering four block assists. One of AQ's three seniors honored prior to the match, Maddie Ingraham added nine kills and a .389 hitting percentage, while playing part in a pair of blocks.

Payton Klein – the reigning WHAC Attacker of the Week – totaled seven kills to go with eight digs and three block assists. Kali Crawford handed out 38 assists, along with six digs, two kills, and a block, while Karly Morris celebrated Senior Day with 17 digs, six assists, and two aces.

Emily Jones provided a match-high five block assists and chipped in two kills, while Sam VanHouten registered 10 pickups. Olivia Martinelli served a pair of aces, Adrien Yondo picked up four digs, and Kenzie Sanders added two digs as AQ's third senior honored on Saturday.

Aquinas will take a six-match winning streak into next week's WHAC Tournament. Although the final pairings are not yet official, it appears AQ will host Lourdes on Wednesday night (Nov. 13) at 7:00 p.m. in the WHAC quarterfinals. The semifinals will take place on Friday (Nov. 15), with the WHAC Championship set for Saturday (Nov. 16).
