Men's Hockey Splits with RMU on the Road

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The men's hockey team traveled to Chicago this weekend to take on Robert Morris for a pair of games. The Saints and Eagles split the two contests, with RMU winning on Friday 3-2 and the Saints taking Saturday night's matchup after a shootout. The Saints are now 11-9 on the season after having their eight game winning streak snapped.

On Friday night, the Eagles came from behind to defeat AQ by a final of 3-2. The Saints took an early lead when Nick Long scored just five minutes into the game, assisted by Brandon Rozema. The Eagles would equalize midway through the period and the teams were tied 1-1 heading into intermission. After a scoreless second-period, the Eagles scored twice to take the lead and control of the game. Goals at :35 and 10:35 gave the home team a 3-1 lead. Aquinas cut the lead in half with eight minutes to go when Rozema found the back of the net off of a Alex Klekotka assist, but it would be as close as the Saints would get. Roman Malkov made 38 saves in net for the Saints in the loss.

The next night, the Saints and Eagles combined for a high-scoring thriller that couldn't be decided in regulation or overtime. Aquinas took an early 2-0 lead with goals by Brandon Schwandt and Alex Klekotka in the first. Rozema and Steven Nisbet had the helpers on Schwandt's goal, while Long and Rozema assisted on Klekotka's goal. The Eagles would respond, however, scoring twice to close the period and tie things at 2-2.

RMU would extend their scoring run to four, with two more goals to start the second-period. Trailing 4-2 now, the Saints responded with a pair of goals to close the period and tie things at 4-4 heading into the third. Klekotka added another goal from Nisbet and Rozema at 16:18, and defenseman Connor Barta tallied his first goal at 18:56 with assists by Rozema and Russel Shengulette.

AQ retook the lead early in the third with a Nick Long goal at 2:27 from Darren Johnson and Steven Gustafson, but RMU would tie things up again late, scoring with just 24 seconds remaining in the game to send it to overtime. A scoreless five minute extra period took the game to a shootout, where the only converted attempt was by the Saints' Steven Gustafson to give the Saints the victory. Nick Ottenbacher made 40 saves on the night to earn the win in net for the Saints.

Aquinas is now off for the Holiday break and returns to action Jan 10-11 with a pair of WHAC games against Indiana Tech.
