Saints Fall to Lawrence Tech, 71-62, at Third Annual Holiday Hoops Game

Camaryia Williams Pulls Down 15 Rebounds

The AQ women's basketball team fell to (RV) Lawrence Tech on Saturday (Dec. 7) at the Sturrus Center by a score of 71-62. The game was the third annual Holiday Hoops game where Christmas-themed activities were featured prior to and during the game, including a visit from Santa Claus.
 
Despite the loss, (RV) Aquinas still has a winning record in WHAC play at 3-2. AQ is 5-6 overall. The Blue Devils improved to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the WHAC.
 
AQ's best numbers came at the free throw line where they went 10-of-13. The Saints also led in turnover differential forcing 15 Blue Devil miscues while only committing 11 of their own. Aquinas shot 31.9 percent from the field for the game including going 6-of-20 from the three-point line. Lawrence Tech shot 39.4 percent and went 11-of-25 from downtown.
 
Three Saints finished in double figures including Daz'Sha Day who led the team with 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting. She also added three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Camaryia Williams led the team in rebounds and assists with 15 boards (12 defensive rebounds) and five helpers. Williams scored 11 points on 5-of-14 from the field and was the team leader in steals with three.
 
Marissa Brady led the Saints in blocks with seven and had 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting. AQ had eight total blocks in the game. She added nine rebounds as well. JaKarri Alven scored eight points, grabbed four rebounds and went 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Keeley Hinton added four boards and five points on 2-of-6 shooting.
 
Ally Frederickson scored four points on 2-of-3 shooting and grabbed four rebounds while Jayda Smith scored five points and was a perfect 2-of-2 from the line. Smith added two steals.
 
The Saints led in offensive rebounds by an 18-16 margin but Lawrence Tech won the overall rebounding battle by a slight 47-45 edge due to a 31-27 lead in defensive boards. AQ led in points off turnovers (14-10) as well as points in the paint (30-24) and second-chance points (15-14).
 
The game was tight throughout as there were five ties. The game was tied 17-17 after the first quarter and 31-31 at the half. AQ's largest lead came in the third quarter when the team took a 40-34 lead at the 7:08 mark on a Day layup as the Saints went on 9-3 run to begin the second half. 
 
The Blue Devils went on a 27-6 run over the next 13 minutes to take a 61-46 lead with 4:26 to go. The Saints would get as close as 68-62 with 19 seconds remaining but Lawrence Tech would close out the game at the free throw line.
 
Aquinas is back on the court on Monday, December 9th when the team heads to South Bend, Indiana to take on Holy Cross at 7:00 PM.
