Saints Open 2019 Season With 3-0 Win

The Aquinas College women's soccer team opened the 2019 season with an impressive 3-0 road win over St. Thomas University (Fla.) in Miami Gardens this evening. The win gives the Saints, who are receiving votes in the opening NAIA Top-25 poll, a 1-0 record on the year.

The Saints dominated possession of the ball early, and never let up. Aquinas barely allowed the Bobcats to control the ball in their half during the first 45 minutes, outshooting their hosts 8-0 in the first-half and earning four corners to the Bobcats' one. After numerous chances, including a shot by Filippa Struxsjo that was deflected off the cross-bar, the Saints struck first in the 27th minute. It was Grace Avery who netted the first goal of the season for the Saints, heading home a corner-kick from Hannah Crum for a 1-0 lead. The Saints would hold that lead heading into the half-time break.

Early in the second-half the Saints created another chance after Raegan Radaz was fouled just outside of the box. Crum struck a free-kick well, but it hit the underside of the cross-bar and stayed out. Soon after, however, Crum would get her redemption. After winning a race to the ball in her half, Crum sped past her defender and delivered a left-footed strike to the far corner of the goal for a 2-0 Saints' lead. Emma Gray had the assist on the goal after leading Crum on the break. The Saints extended their lead to 3-0 in the 74th minute when freshman Katelyn Kahael scored her first collegiate goal, with fellow freshman Macy Hollingsworth earning her first career assist.

After 90 minutes of play, the Saints ended up with a 15-1 advantage in shots, including a 8-0 lead in shots on goals. AQ earned five corners to the Bobcats' zero. Saints' goalkeeper Braeleigh McCoy earned her first career win, keeping the Bobcats scoreless for 74:53, with freshman Taryn Webb finishing the final 14:07 to keep the team shutout.

The Saints will have a day off tomorrow before taking on #2 ranked Keiser University on Sunday at 1:00 pm EST. Stay tuned to aqsaints.com for live coverage and scores.
