For the second straight match, it took 110 minutes to decide the final for the Aquinas College men's soccer team. Also for the second straight match, the Saints found themselves even after two overtime periods and with a draw with their opponents.
The Saints hosted St. Xavier University (Ill.) tonight on the AQ Athletic Field, the first contest on brand new turf playing surface. The Saints played tough in a physical, hard-fought contest, but were unable to find the deciding goal to come away with the victory.
Aquinas held an advantage in both possession and shots, the latter a 16-9 advantage for the home team. However, a very physical gameplan by the Cougars was able to keep the Saints from stringing too many scoring chances together, and strong play by Cougar goalkeeper Alan Garcia held the Saints scoreless. Both teams were very aggressive defensively, with a combined 39 fouls whistled, 21 on the Cougars. Four yellow-cards were also issued, three belonging to the visitors.
The Saints defense, led by freshman
Jai Tahlan and
Brandon Diedrick, had a solid game limiting the St. Xavier attack. The defense only allowed three shots on goal all night, all of which were stopped by goalkeeper
Antonio Strassioto.
Aquinas will look to earn its first win of the season this Friday, when they travel to Hammond, Indiana to take on Purdue University- Northwest. Game time is 4:00 pm. Follow along @aqsaints for updates and scores.
