Box Score 2 The women's hockey team concluded play at this weekend's GVSU Showcase yesterday by splitting its final two games. The Saints shut-out Concordia 8-0 before falling to Midland 5-0 in the nightcap. Aquinas is now 1-2 on the season.Â
In the first game of the day, the Saints offense was clicking on all cylinders. Aquinas found the back of the net eight times against the Cardinals, the most goals they have scored in a game since November of 2017.
Amelia Bartels started the scoring barrage for the Saints at 12:40 in the first to give AQ an early 1-0 lead. The second period was the
Natalie Vaitas show, as the junior notched a hat-trick during the second 20-minute stanza. Vaitas scored her first of the day with an assist from
Tori Feddema.
Gabby Fournier was the next Saint on the scoresheet, scoring at 16:48 in the second with an assist by
Alyssa Buzar. Vaitas scored the final two goals of the period to give the Saints a 5-0 lead after 40 minutes of play. Fournier and Buzar assisted on Vaitas' powerplay goal at 3:37, and freshman
Madison Morgrette assisted on Vaitas' third goal just seconds later.Â
Buzar knotched her third assist of the day by getting the helper on an
Avery Martin goal to begin the third period. Just minutes later, Vaitas scored her fourth goal of the game, and
Ashley Reese capped the scoring with a late goal off an assist from
Maria Maguire.
Ally Kennedy earned the shutout in net for the Saints, stopping 16 Cardinal shots along the way.
In the nightcap, the Saints took on national-power Midland University. The Saints held the Warriors to their lowest scoring total of the season so far, but were unable to come away with the victory in a 5-0 loss. Kennedy made 36 saves in a losing effort for Aquinas.
The Saints return to the ice in two weeks with a weekend home and home series with Concordia University, with a home date on October 11th at Southside Ice Arena.Â
