The men's hockey team hit the ice for the first time in 2020 last night, taking on Indiana Tech on the road in an ACHA DI Top-20 battle. Unfortunately, the Saints were on the losing end of a 6-3 score, dropping their record to 11-10 on the year and 4-7 in WHAC play.
The host Warriors jumped out to a great start, scoring within the first 30 seconds of the game and finding the back of the net three times in the first period to take a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes of action. The Saints got on the scoreboard early in the second to make it 3-1 thanks to an
Augustus Hickle goal, assisted by
Mike Curran. The Warriors would respond in a big way, scoring three-straight goals in a three minute span to take a 6-1 lead midway through the second period.
The Saints rebounded to score the next two goals, with
Kyle Truax (assisted by
Thomas Davis on the powerplay) and
Russell Shengulette (assisted by Curran and
Nick Stockert) lighting the lamp. Neither team would score again after Shengulette's tally, and after a scoreless third period, the Warriors took the game by a 6-3 final.Â
Aquinas was 1-6 on the man-advantage on the night, and killed all four Warrior powerplays. A total of 25 penalties were whistled on the evening. The Saints outshot their hosts 46-28 on the night.
Roman Malkov made nine saves while allowing five goals, while
Nick Ottenbacher made 13 saves on 14 shots in relief.
The two teams will play again Sunday night at Southside Ice Arena at 8:00 pm in a re-scheduled game from 1/11.Â
