The Saints fell to #22 Madonna by a score of 81-68 on Saturday (Jan. 18) in a road matchup in Livonia, Michigan.
AQ drops to 6-15 on the year and 2-9 in the conference while the Crusaders improve to 16-5 overall and 8-3 in the WHAC.
The Crusaders began the game with a 10-2 run but the Saints fought back with three-pointers to cut the deficit to 13-10. However, Madonna would go on a 33-22 run during the rest of the first half to take a 46-32 lead going into the break.
In the second half, Aquinas cut the deficit to 10 at 55-45 due to a 6-0 spurt but Madonna then scored eight out of the next nine points to extend their lead to 63-46 with less than 10 minutes left in the second half. The Crusaders would hold on for the 81-68 victory.
Three Saints scored in double figures.
Davion Benton led the team with a double-double scoring 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting along with 10 rebounds (six defensive and four offensive). He also added two steals and went 5-of-8 from the free throw line.
Sammie Ryans scored 15 points on 5-of-10 shots from the field and 3-of-7 from three-point range along with three boards.
Jesse Hillis shot 3-of-5 to score 10 points with three assists.
Andrew Myers added eight points along with four rebounds and three assists while
Justin Lary and
Truman Hillis scored seven points.
Beau LePage dished out two helpers and grabbed three rebounds.
AQ held advantages in some team categories including offensive rebounds (14-10) and points off turnovers (27-21). Madonna led in shooting making 29-of-52 (55.8%) shots while Aquinas made 22-of-55 (40.0%) shots in addition to Crusader advantages in three-point shooting, free throw shooting and other categories.
The Saints head home for a matchup against UM-Dearborn on Wednesday (Jan.22) at 7:30 PM at the Sturrus Center.
