Box Score 2 The Aquinas College women's hockey team took on Northern Michigan University for a pair of games this weekend in Traverse City as part of the Traverse City Showcase. The Saints came up on the short end of two close, hard fought games and are now 3-14 on the season.
On Saturday afternoon, the Saints jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the first period.
Natalie Vaitas found the back of the net on the powerplay to open the scoring for the Saints, with
Alyssa Buzar and
Amelia Bartels assisting on the play. With under two minutes to go in the period,
Tori Feddema made it 2-0 with Vaitas on the assist.
The Saints made it 3-0 early in the second period when Vaitas struck again, this time with
Madison Morgrette with the helper. Unfortunately for the Saints, the Wildcats came roaring back, scoring the next four goals of the period, and final four goals of the game, to claim the come-from-behind victory. The Wildcats held a 33-23 advantage on shots for the afternoon, with Aquinas goalie
Ally Kennedy posting 29 saves in the defeat.Â
On Sunday, the teams met for a re-match, which was won again by NMU, this time by a 3-1 score. After a scoreless first period, this time it was the Wildcats jumping out to a 2-0 lead after breaking the deadlock three minutes into the period and following that up with a goal four minutes later. The Saints got back into the game with a goal by
Alyssa Buzar midway through the period, but NMU would regain their two-goal advantage minutes later.
Madison Morgrette had the assist on Buzar's goal, but that would be the only scoring on the day for AQ. The Saints were outshot on the day 37-13, but
Ally Kennedy kept the Saints in the game til the end with an impressive 34 save performance.
The Saints are back in action next weekend with a home and home series with GVSU on Friday and Saturday night. The Saints host the Lakers on Satruday at Southside. Puck drops at 7:00 pm.Â
