The AQ women's basketball team claimed its fifth consecutive victory against Lawrence Tech in Southfield, Michigan on Saturday (Jan. 25) by a score of 73-66.

It was the team's ninth win in the last 11 games as AQ improves to 10-3 in the WHAC and 14-8 overall. The Blue Devils drop to 9-4 in WHAC play and 15-8 overall. This was Aquinas's first victory over Lawrence Tech this season after a 71-62 home defeat on December 7th in Grand Rapids. AQ is now third in the WHAC standings passing the Blue Devils who are currently fourth.

The Saints went back and forth with the Blue Devils in the first quarter and trailed 16-14. AQ then outscored Lawrence Tech 31-15 in the second quarter to lead 45-31 at the break.

The Blue Devils cut AQ's lead to five at 59-54 at the end of the third quarter after a 23-14 run in the frame. They would get within a possession multiple times but Aquinas would hold on in the fourth quarter with a 14-12 advantage in the frame.Â

Aquinas shot an efficient 20-of-23 (87 percent) from the free throw line. The Saints went 24-of-52 from the field (46.2 percent) while the Blue Devils went 27-of-65 (41.5 percent) from the floor. AQ shot 11-15 from the field in the second quarter to build its lead. The Saints also shot 5-of-12 (41.7 percent) from three-point range compared to 10-of-26 (38.5 percent) for Lawrence Tech.

Jaylynn Williams led the team in scoring with 22 points on 8-of-18 shots including 2-of-4 from three-point range and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. She also added three rebounds, all of which were on the defensive glass.

Jordyn Wigg scored a career-high 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting and went 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. She nearly doubled her previous career high of eight points from last season. She grabbed two rebounds as well.

Two other Saints scored in double figures including
Daz'Sha Day and
Marissa Brady. Day scored 13 points on 3-of-4 shooting and made 6-of-6 of her free throws. She dished out a team-leading three assists and grabbed two defensive rebounds. Brady added 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting with nine rebounds (eight defensive) to lead AQ along with two blocks.

Camaryia Williams was second for AQ in rebounds with seven (four defensive, three offensive) while scoring nine points.
Jayda Smith and
Ally Frederickson each scored two points while Smith had three rebounds and Frederickson added two.
JaKarri Alven also grabbed three boards.

AQ led in defensive rebounds (29-24) while Lawrence Tech had an edge in defensive boards (11-6) as the teams were tied (35-35) in overall rebounding. The Saints also led in blocks (4-3), steals (4-2), points in the paint (34-18), points off turnovers (17-10) and bench points (19-9).

Day made a crucial three-pointer with 50 seconds left in the fourth quarter to extend AQ's lead to five (71-66) as the Blue Devils got within two points. Brady blocked two shots in the fourth quarter to keep Lawrence Tech from gaining further momentum in their comeback attempt. Day would also add two more free throws in the final minute to close out the victory.
