The Aquinas College men's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end this afternoon with an 81-74 loss to Concordia University at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center. The loss drops the Saints overall record to 6-11 on the year and 2-5 in WHAC play.
The two teams traded buckets to open play, but the visiting Cardinals would take a slim lead around the five minute mark. The Saints would counter and go on a run to take a lead midway through the first, but would use a 12-2 run to take a seven-point advantage late in the first. The Cardinal lead would grow to as much as eight before the Saints cut it to just three at the half.
Aquinas opened the second-half on a 10-2 run to take a five point lead. The Cardinals would once again crawl back, eventually taking a lead at the 12:36 mark that they would never relinquish. The lead swelled to as much as ten at one point, but the Saints kept trying to fight back into the game. In the end, however, the Cardinals would prove to be too much and took the game 81-74.
The Saints out-rebounded the Cardinals 32-29 on the day and only committed nine turnovers to the Cardinals' 13, but the game would end up coming down to shot-making. The Cardinals connected on 11-22 shots from beyond the arc, while the Saints hit only 2-20 three-pointers' on the day. Overall, the Cardinals shot 54% to the Saints 47%.
Jesse Hills led the Saints with a season-high 22 points on 9-16 shooting. Freshman
Gabe Overway had one of his best games as a Saint, posting 14 points on 6-8 shooting from the field and 2-2 from the stripe.
Deric Murray came off the bench to add 14 points, connecting on 6-8 field goals.
Justin Lary and
Davion Benton led the Saints with nine rebounds on the day, while
Andrew Myers added eight points, four rebounds and four assists.
The Saints return to action this coming Wednesday when they host WHAC foe Indiana Tech at 7:30 pm at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center.
