The men's hockey team picked up its seventh-straight victory with a 5-0 win over Rochester last night at Southside Ice Arena. The win improves the Saints record to 20-12 on the year, and 10-8 in WHAC play.
Alex Klekotka opened the scoring for the Saints with an unassisted goal at 7:38 in the first-period. Despite dominating play and the shots on goal marks, the Saints led just 1-0 after 20 minutes of play due to the strong goaltending of the Warriors' starting goalie, Anthony Carlier.
The Saints opened things up in the second and were finally able to solve Carlier, scoring three times in the period to run away with the game.
Russell Shengulette made it 2-0 early in the period with assists by
Mike Curran and
Nick Long. Just over four minutes later
Darren Johnson increased the lead to 3-0 after blasting home a rebound off of a
Kyle Truax wrap-around attempt.
Ryan Wolfe made it 4-0 thanks to helpers from
Nick Stockert and
Mike Curran.
Curran found the back of the net with just six minutes left in the third to put the game away, Stockert and
Max Berry had the assists. The Saints' defense continued to play strong to finish the game out in front of goaltender
Nick Ottenbacher and keep the Warriors off the scoreboard. The junior from New Baltimore picked up his second shutout of the season by making 18 saves on the night. Defenders
Thomas Davis and
Brandon Schwandt helped keep the clean sheet with strong defensive play.
The Saints finish the regular season next weekend with a home and home series with Concordia. Senior day for the Saints will take place next Friday at 8:00 pm at Southside Ice Arena.
