Men's Hockey Advances to WHAC Semi's

The men's hockey team advanced to the WHAC Tournament semi-finals with a win last night against Concordia by a final of 8-0. The Saints improve to 23-12 on the season and will take on Indiana Tech in tonight's semi-finals.

The Saints took a 1-0 lead early in the first on a powerplay goal by Darren Johnson at 4:45. Brandon Rozema and Trent Kulczyk had the assists on the play. Aquinas would hold that 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission. In the second period, the Saints grew the lead to 3-0 with goals by Kyle Truax and Darren Johnson again. Johnson and Arthur Pruhitsky assisted on Truax's goal, while Mason Stewart and Kulczyk assisted on Johnson's second of the evening.

In the third-period, already leading by three goals, the Saints pulled away. AQ scored five times in the period to finish off the Cardinals. Kulczyk got his first of the game early in the period, with Kyle Truax scoring a shorthanded goal five minutes later. The Saints got their second powerplay goal of the night off the stick of Brandon Schwandt, with Alex Klekotka scoring his first of the game with under two minutes remaining. With just 41 seconds left, Johnson capped off his hat-trick.

Johnson led the way for the Saints with three goals and an assist. Kyle Truax had two goals and three assists on the day. Kulczyk had a goal and two helpers, while Brandon Rozema had two assists himself. Brandon Schwandt also had a multi-point day with a goal and an assist. The Saints outshot the Cardinals 60-16 on the night. Roman Malkov earned the shutout in net, stopping all 16 shots he faced.

The Saints take on Indiana Tech tonight in Farmington Hills, as Lawrence Tech is hosting the tournament. The Saints will look to advance to the WHAC Tournament Finals and pick up a big win as they hope to improve their resume and lock down a bid to the ACHA D1 National Tournament.
