Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Doug Seites, Associate Sports Information Director

Men's Hockey Tames Cougars 10-1

The men's hockey team raced out to an early lead and never looked back against the visiting Cleary Cougars last night at Southside, taking the game by a 10-1 final. Its the fourth-straight win for the Saints, who are now 17-12 overall on the season.

Will Kortz opened the scoring just four minutes into the game, netting his second goal of the year off of assists by Brandon Rozema and Greg McQuade. The sophomore McQuade would be the next to find the back of the net, just three and a half minutes later. McQuade finished with 1g-1a on the day, the second-straight game he's produced that scoring line. Brandon Schwandt assisted on McQuade's goal, as he would on the next Saints' goal, scored by Jake Froysland. Connor Matulaitis also assisted on the freshman's second goal of the season. The Saints would close the first-period with a 5-0 lead thanks to another goal by Froysland and one by Russell Shengulette.

The Saints' lead grew to 6-0 after a Thomas Davis goal. Cleary got on the board for their lone goal of the day at 16:28 in the second, but the Saints quickly countered with a Max Berry goal less than 30 seconds later. Trent Kulczyk lit the lamp as the second-period wound down to make it 8-1. The Saints added two more in the third to grow the final margin to 10-1 thanks to goals by Shengulette and Froysland again.

Froysland, the freshman from Byron Center, had the best game of his young Saints' career, scoring a hat-trick on the night and converting all three of his shots on goal. Shengulette added two goals on the night, while Berry, McQuade, Kulczyk, Davis and Kortz added the others. Alex Klekotka had a career-high four assists to lead the Saints, while Brandon Schwandt had three of his own. Darren Johnson had a pair of helpers, while Kyle Truax, Mason Stewart, Nick Long, and Steven Nisbet also had assists to match those by McQuade, Berry and Matulaitis.

Junior goaltender Morgan Nissen earned his first career start in goal for the Saints, earning the win by allowing just one goal and making seven saves. The Saints outshot the Cougars 53-7 on the night. The two teams are back at it again this afternoon, this time in Hartland as the Cougars host AQ.
