The women's lacrosse team raced out to an early lead in their season-opening game at Hope College, but were unable to pull of the W as their hosts from Hope came back to defeat the Saints 13-7. The Saints are now 0-1 on the season and will open their home schedule this Friday against St. Mary's (IN).
Hope struck first to take an early 1-0 lead but the Saints quickly responded with a goal by
Trinity Reynoso, the first of her Saints' career.
Alyssa Chartier assisted on the play. Hope scored again to take a 2-1 lead, but the Saints quickly countered again, this time with the first career goal by freshman
Lauren Hansen. Once again Chartier had the assist on the play.Â
The Saints would strike for the next two goals to end a 3-0 run with a 4-2 lead midway through the first period. Both goals came from the stick of senior
Lauren Sanford. Unfortunately for the Saints, Hope would end the half on a 4-0 run, with three goals in the final three minutes, to take a 6-4 lead into the half. Hope struck again early in the second to make the lead 7-4, but Sanford would again counter to cut the lead back down to two. The two teams would trade the next four goals back and forth, with Sanford scoring both for the Saints and keeping them just two goals down at 9-7. However, Hope would finish strong and score the final four goals of the game to pull away and claim the 13-7 win.
Aquinas won the groundball battle 25-15, but were outshot by Hope 44-15 and won only 6-22 draws on the day.
Rachel McCurdy, making her return to net for the Saints after a couple of seasons away, made 16 saves and led the team with seven groundballs. Sanford, the Saints' leading scorer last season and a returning All-American, led the way offensively with five goals. It was the 19th career game for Sanford with five or more goals.Â
