Men's Lacrosse Tops Tennessee Wesleyan 14-9

The #7 men's lacrosse team picked up a 14-9 road win over Tennessee Wesleyan yesterday, improving their season record to 2-0 on the year. Walker West led the Saints with six goals on the day, while Jon Jardis added five assists.

The Saints, playing without a pair of starters, got off to a slow start against a Tennessee Wesleyan team that recently beat the #6 ranked team in the NAIA. Trailing 2-0 before Walker West opened the scoring with seven minutes left to go in the first. The Bulldogs took a 3-1 lead before Joey Fitzgerald scored late in the quarter to cut the lead to 3-2. The Saints scored the opening goals of the 2nd quarter to take a 4-3-lead, and after the Bulldogs tied it up, Walker West scored again with just 17 seconds left to give the Saints a 5-4 lead heading into break.

The Saints would never relinquish that lead, as they started the 3rd quarter on a 4-0 run, and finished the quarter outscoring their hosts 6-1 to take an 11-5 lead. The Bulldogs made a pair of two goal runs, but Nash West and Walker West both answered to stop momentum. The Saints outshot TWU 34-32 on the day and dominated the groundballs, winning that battle 37-24.

Walker West led the Saints with a career-high six goals, while also adding an assist. Jon Jardis paced the Saints with five assists and a goal. Nash West had three goals and an assist while Joey Fitzgerald had a pair of goals and a pair of assists. Blake Baker also scored, while Hunter Roberts netted his first career goal. Danny Sysko had an assist on the day.

Gabe Schmader earned his first start at the faceoff-x and shined, winning 16 of 24 faceoffs to help give the Saints a huge faceoff advantage. Also with his first start was redshirt-freshman goalie Jack Kordek, who made nine saves in net and picked up five groundballs. Jake Lee led the Saints with eight groundballs on the day.

Aquinas will next travel to Kentucky to take on #4 University of the Cumberlands on Tuesday night.
