#9 Aquinas Drops Season Opener to Visiting Indiana Tech

The #9 AQ men's volleyball team fell to Indiana Tech in the Sturrus Center in their season opener on Tuesday night (Jan. 26th). The Saints fell short in a three-set sweep by scores of 25-27, 17-25, and 24-26 to start the 2021 season.

After Tuesday night's match, Indiana Tech improves to a 4-1, 1-0 WHAC mark while Aquinas records its first loss on the first contest of the year moving to 0-1, 0-1 WHAC.

Despite the sweep, the match was highly competitive with Aquinas only falling by two points in sets one and three. Between the two teams there were 16 lead changes and seven ties in tonight's match.

Indiana Tech was strong defensively, outblocking the Saints eight team blocks to one for the Saints. The Warriors had two more kills than AQ and edged out Aquinas in hitting percentage, recording a .240 clip to AQ's .154 mark. The Warriors also led in aces (6-3), kills (39-32), and digs (37-32). Indiana Tech tallied 12 total service errors, to just 10 for Aquinas.

Julian Armendano led Aquinas offensively with a team-high 14 kills to finish with a .267 hitting percentage. Armendano tallied six digs for the Saints and added two aces. Matthew Richmond recorded 21 assists for AQ while contributing four digs. Kelsey Yogi posted a match-high 12 digs for the Saints.

Leo-Paul Rousseau tallied eight assists and added three digs. Gavin Jonker totaled six kills in his first match and Daniel Littleton recorded five kills for the Saints.

AQ will be on the road tomorrow (Jan. 27th) as the Saints travel to Goshen, Indiana to take on the Maple Leafs of Goshen in another WHAC contest.
