Rochester Pulls Away From Aquinas in Closing Minutes, 69-63

Hillis leads AQ with 19 points, Ali adds 11 off the bench

The WHAC matchup between Aquinas and visiting Rochester on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 31) in the Sturrus Center came down to the final few minutes. AQ held a 63-62 lead with 3:42 remaining over the Warriors, but RU scored the game's last seven points to prevail 69-63.

It was the second home game in two days for Aquinas, which dropped a hard-fought 79-67 contest to Indiana Tech on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 30). The Saints (0-4, 0-3 WHAC) led undefeated Rochester (4-0, 3-0 WHAC) at halftime 38-33, but were outscored by the visitors by a 36-25 margin over the final 20 minutes.

The lead changed hands 12 times on Sunday, with AQ holding the game's largest lead at 27-15 midway through the first half. Rochester's largest advantage was at the end of the game in the six-point win.

Rochester shot 44.3 percent from the field and went just 6-of-27 from downtown. The Warriors held a slight 32-31 rebounding edge, but were strong in the paint with a 42-30 advantage. Aquinas hit 46.2 percent of its field goals and shot an efficient 8-for-18 from long range. The Saints did commit 22 turnovers, which led to 20 Rochester points.

Jesse Hillis led Aquinas with 19 points, six assists, and five rebounds. He made 8-of-16 field goals and was 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Tevin Ali made 5-of-6 field goals and recorded 11 points, five rebounds, and two steals. Gabe Overway was the third Saint in double digits, adding 10 points and eight rebounds.

Justin Lary chipped in eight points and three rebounds, while Trevor Ballard totaled seven points and four boards. Sammie Ryans grabbed six rebounds and scored five points.

After Rochester scored the game's first five points, Aquinas notched 12 of the next 14 points and used a Hillis three-pointer to go in front, 12-7. Two layups from Ali and another from Overway gave AQ the 27-15 advantage with 8:43 to play in the first half. The Warriors pulled within three points in the final minute before Ali scored again before halftime to make it a 38-33 edge.

Aquinas led by eight early in the second half before Rochester battled back and tied the score at 45-all. The game was tied again four more times, including the final time at 62-62 when Overway hit the first of two free throws. His second freebie made it 63-62 with 3:42 to play.

The Warriors converted a layup on the ensuing possession and added two more layups a few minutes later to pull away with the road victory.

AQ concludes the three-game homestand on Wednesday (Feb. 3) against crosstown rival Cornerstone. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
