AQ Picks Up Shutout Win Against Cleary

The Saints beat out Cleary for a 3-0 Victory

The Aquinas men's hockey team opened up the series against Cleary tonight (Oct. 15) at the 140 Ice Den. Aquinas earned a 3-0 shutout victory over the Cleary Cougars. The Saints opened up the game with an early goal in the first period. The game remained at a 1-0 stalemate until AQ broke the game open with two powerplay goals in the third period. AQ is now 2-1 and 1-0 in WHAC conference play.

Dylan Rumpke scored his first collegiate goal at 9:48 in the first period. That goal was assisted by Nick Stockert and Mason Stewart. That goal provided the Saints with a 1-0 lead that held until the third period. Over the span of one minute, Aquinas added two more goals with scores at 7:03 and 6:17 in the third period. Alex Klekotka and Stewart took advantage of two powerplay opportunities. Darren Johnson assisted the Stewart goal and Daniel Nelson and Stewart picked up assists for the Klekotka goal. That assist gave Stewart two assists and a goal on the night.

Tyler Szturm picked up his first win of the season with the shutout victory. Szturm blocked off 23 shots from Cleary.

The Saints edged out the Cougars in multiple statistical categories, leading in shots on target (36-23) and faceoff victories (44-28).

Aquinas will be back on the ice tomorrow (Oct. 16) for the second game of the series at Southside Ice Arena at 8:00 PM.
