Aquinas Women's Tennis Plays Davenport and Lake Superior State over Weekend

The Saints take losses to NCAA Division II programs DU and LSSU to close out fall schedule

The Aquinas women's tennis team fell to NCAA Division II opponents Davenport and Lake Superior State on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon (Oct. 1-2). The Saints were upended by the Panthers 5-2 at the Farmers Athletic Complex yesterday before competing in their only home match of the fall schedule at MVP Sportsplex where they faced the Lakers and were defeated 6-1.

Against the Panthers, the Saints doubles team of Sofia Gomez and Joska Volder were able to takedown their opponent 6-1 in the #1 doubles. However Mimi Pecheco and Jenna Hausman were taken down in the #2 doubles 4-6 and the Saints withdrew from the #3 doubles to give DU the doubles point.

Volder and Vanessa Heylmun were about to get victories in the #2 and #4 singles matches with Volder prevailing 4-6, 6-0, 10-4 and Heylmun coming out on top 6-1, 6-2. The Panthers were able to get single wins over #1 Gomez (3-6, 6-0, 1-10), #3 Pecheco (2-6, 0-6), and #5 Hausman (4-6, 2-6) with the Saints withdrawing from the #6 singles match.

Against the Lakers, the Saints doubles team of Gomez and Volder won for the second straight day in the #1 doubles match 6-3. Pecheco and Heylmun were upended in the #2 doubles 1-6 and Aquinas withdrew from the #3 doubles to give LSSU the doubles point.

Gomez won the lone singles match, winning in the #1 singles 1-6, 6-4, 10-8. The Lakers were able to get single wins over #2 Gomez (3-6, 5-7), #3 Pecheco (0-6, 1-6), #4 Heylmun (0-6, 0-6) and #5 Hausman (0-6, 1-6) with the Saints withdrawing from the #6 singles match.

The Saints finished the fall season 1-4 with the win coming against Goshen and will look toward the spring season.
