The Aquinas women's tennis team fell in the first match of the 2022 season to Ferris State on Friday afternoon (Feb. 4). The Saints competed against the Bulldogs at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Michigan where FSU took a 7-0 win over AQ.
Aquinas fielded two doubles teams in
Sofia Gomez and newcomer
Carlota Arzabe, who were the #1 doubles team, then
Mimi Pacheco and
Vanessa Heylmun, who were the #2 doubles team. Ferris State got the best of the doubles matches as Gomez/Arzabe fell 6-1 and Pacheco/Heylmun fell 6-4 with the #3 doubles match also being won by FSU due to forfeit.
The singles matches did not fare much better with the Bulldogs taking down all four Saints to complete the sweep. In the #1 singles match, Gomez was swept 6-0, 6-0 and in the #2 singles match, Pacheco was defeated 6-2, 6-0. In her collegiate debut, Arzabe competed in the #3 singles match and fell 6-2, 6-3 with Heylmun finishing the day in the #4 singles match and going down 6-3, 6-2. The remaining two singles matches were awarded to the Bulldogs as AQ did not have in competitors in those two spots.
Aquinas will be back in action on Saturday (Feb. 12) with a match-up against Calvin at the MVP Sportsplex, with the day starting at 2:00 PM.
