The Aquinas men's soccer team came away with a WHAC road victory over UM-Dearborn on Wednesday evening (Oct. 20). Playing at Dearborn High School, the Saints gained a 1-0 double overtime win over the Wolverines and are now within a half-game of Lawrence Tech and Madonna for third place in the conference.
The Saints' overall record improves to 4-5-2 with a WHAC record of 4-2-1 after the win, while the Wolverines' overall record drops to 3-9-1 and 2-4-1 in the WHAC.
Aquinas controlled the pace in the scoreless first half, outshooting UM-Dearborn 8-2. However, neither team was able to score and the same was said in the second half with both teams recording nine shots a piece. The second half is when the physical play came out as nine yellow cards were handed out with a 10th being recorded in the first overtime period.
Play began to slow down in the overtime periods as each team only recorded one shot in the first 10 minutes of the overtime session. Early in the second overtime period, the Wolverines were called for a penalty in the box that awarded a penalty kick to the Saints.
Theo Maye stepped up and drilled his second PK goal of the season to give AQ with 1-0 golden goal victory. Both of Maye's goals on the season have come from the penalty kick stripe.
Jared Ireland (3-0-1) has not allowed a goal in his 392:38 minutes played this season and grabbed five more saves in the winning effort. Everest Brace allowed the only goal of the game in the loss, while collecting eight saves.
Aquinas outshot UM-Dearborn 19-12 in the game and also led in shots on net by a 9-5 margin. AQ also held a slim 9-8 advantage in corner kicks, while the Saints committed 18 fouls to the Wolverines' 14.
Aquinas will continue WHAC play by traveling to Madonna, who is receiving votes in the top-25 poll, on Saturday (Oct. 22) in Livonia, Michigan, with kick-off scheduled for 2:00 PM.
