The Aquinas men's soccer team had another great offensive showing in the victory over Concordia on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 30) at the AQ Athletic Field. The Saints scored just 1:09 into the first half and did not look back as four different Saints scored to contribute to the 5-1 win over the Cardinals on senior day.
Aquinas finishes the regular season with a 6-5-3 overall record and a WHAC record of 6-2-2, while Concordia completed its season with a 2-15-0 overall record and 0-10-0 in the WHAC. AQ currently sits in fourth place in the WHAC with a couple more games left to be played around the conference today.
The Saints put on the offensive pressure right away with the first goal coming 1:09 into the game.
Baptiste Bissessur sent a corner kick into the box as
Joe Lockey connected on a header for his first career collegiate goal. Five minutes later, Bissessur this time scored on a corner kick as it glanced off a Cardinal defender after he bent it in towards the net for his first goal of the season. Concordia quickly responded 40 seconds later with a goal of its own after Bryce Schaner put away a through ball from Ignacio Garcia. AQ was able to get the two goal lead back in the 37th minute when Lockey connected on his second goal of the day, this time getting the helper from
Theo Maye. The Saints took the 3-1 lead into halftime after the offensive driven first half.
The pace slowed in the second half, but that did not keep Aquinas off the scoreboard.
Joshua Clemitson scored the fourth goal on the day for the Saints to cushion the lead to three. Maye chipped in with his second assist of the day as Clemitson's second goal of the season was rifled right under the crossbar. The final goal came with just 2:19 remaining in the contest as
Milan Hoefnagels took a little chip pass from Maye and buried his second goal of the season.
Jared Ireland (5-0-2) completed the regular season undefeated in net after grabbing three saves and allowing the one goal. Kyri Wixom took the loss for CUAA by making six saves and allowing five goals.
Aquinas outshot Concordia by 23-6 margin and also put 11 shots on net compared to CUAA's four. AQ also held a 15-3 advantage in corner kicks, while the Saints committed 18 fouls to the Cardinals' 12.
The WHAC Tournament seeds will officially be announced on Sunday (Oct. 31) after the completion of the regular season games. Aquinas will be a part of a WHAC Quarterfinals game on Saturday (Nov. 6) with the opponent, site, and time to be determined.
