The #11 Aquinas women's soccer team survived a scare against Concordia on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 30) at the AQ Athletic Field. The Saints fell behind early in the game, but scored twice in the second period to defeat the Cardinals 2-1 on senior day.
Aquinas ends the regular season with a 16-1-1 record and a 10-0-1 WHAC record, while Concordia's record dropped to 10-5-2 overall and 4-4-2 in the WHAC. AQ clinched the WHAC regular season title and the #1 seed in the WHAC Tournament on Wednesday and was presented with the championship trophy after today's game. Aquinas has now clinched an automatic qualifying bid for the NAIA National Tournament prior to the WHAC Tournament even beginning.
The Cardinals scored first in the 14th minute to grab the early lead over the Saints. Megan Starkey scored the goal and CUAA took that one goal lead into halftime. Offensively that Saints did not have many chances to score in the first half and only shot the ball nine times.
The comeback began in the second half with Aquinas having more urgency to get things done. After a Cardinal penalty was called right outside of the box,
Hannah Crum stepped up and buried her team leading 13th goal of the season to even the score at one. The game continued to go back and forth on the pitch as regulation time started winding down. With 1:43 remaining,
Jenna Konwerski sent a cross into the box that bounced around a bit before
Macy Hollingsworth got her right foot on it to give the Saints the 2-1 lead. The game winning goal was Hollingsworth's sixth goal of the season and boosted AQ over CUAA.
Tairyn Webb (12-1-0) collected two saves in her eighth straight win in net after
Braeleigh McCoy started for one last time in an AQ uniform due to injuries throughout the year. Anna Roman made 10 saves in the loss for Concordia after giving up two goals.
The Saints took 27 total shots with 16 being on net as all three of the Cardinals' shots ended up on frame. AQ attempted 14 corner kicks compared to CUAA's one, while Aquinas committed four fouls to Concordia's 10.
The WHAC Tournament soccer seeds will officially be announced on Sunday (Oct. 31) as Aquinas will wait to find out its next opponent. AQ will host that opponent in the WHAC Quarterfinals at the AQ Athletic Field on Wednesday (Nov. 3), with kick-off scheduled for 7:00 PM.
