The Aquinas men's basketball team won its second straight game on Wednesday night (Feb. 10), running past visiting Siena Heights by a 72-62 final score. AQ shot above 50 percent from the field and beyond the arc and led by as many as 22 points in the second half before finishing off the win.
Wednesday's win came on the heels of Sunday's 84-64 road win at UNOH to put Aquinas at 2-6 on the season and 2-5 in WHAC play. Siena Heights drops to 1-6 overall and 1-5 in league action.
Seven AQ players scored at least eight points, with Jesse Hillis as the team's lone double-digit scorer. Hillis made 5-of-7 shots (2-of-3 threes) and recorded 14 points, eight assists, and three steals. Trevor Ballard (3-of-6 triples, four steals), Justin Lary (seven boards, four assists), Menalito McGee (4-of-6 field goals, four rebounds), and Deric Murray scored nine points apiece.
Aquinas shot 52.9 percent from the field and went 9-of-18 from downtown, including a 6-for-10 clip from beyond the arc in the second half. AQ assisted on 19 of its 27 field goals. Gabe Overway neared a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds, while Sammie Ryans made a pair of three-pointers and posted eight points and four boards.
Siena Heights shot 43.1 percent from the field and 5-of-18 from three-point range. The visiting Saints led in points in the paint (36-30) and second chance points (9-0). AQ held a 32-31 edge on the glass.
It was 22-7 in Aquinas' favor at the 9:53 mark of the opening half after five straight layups: Murray, Hillis, and Tevin Ali all made one and McGee scored on two layups during the 10-0 run. The lead stretched to 34-18 on a Ryans jumper with 2:43 remaining, but Siena Heights closed the gap to 35-27 at halftime.
The turning point in the game came early in the second half. SHU hit a layup to make it a 35-29 score in the opening minute. Ryans drained a three-pointer on AQ's next possession to begin the game-changing run. Nearly two minutes later, Ballard buried a triple and there was a Siena Heights foul during the shot. AQ kept possession of the ball and 11 seconds later, Hillis nailed a trifecta for a rare six-point possession.
A minute later, Ryans bookended his earlier three-ball with another triple and capped the quick 12-0 run to push the score to 47-29 only four minutes into the half. AQ pushed to a 22-point lead (64-42) with 6:48 to play Siena Heights could not get closer than 13 points until the final minute when the game was pretty much decided.
Aquinas is back at home on Saturday (Feb. 13) inside the Sturrus Center against Lourdes. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
