The Aquinas women's basketball team traveled to Ann Arbor, Michigan to face the Cardinals of Concordia, who are receiving national votes, on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 14). The Saints held the Cardinals to 30 percent shooting from the field and made 23 free throws in the contest to pull out the WHAC road win, 66-54.
AQ advances to 4-5 overall and 4-5 in WHAC play, earning their second win in a row. Concordia moves to 10-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play after today's loss.
The aggressive Saints got to the charity stripe 31 times, making more free throws (23) than the Cardinals shot (16). The Saints shot 74.2% from the free throw line and 43.2% from the field as a team (19-44).Â
Aquinas led the Cardinals in total rebounds, tallying 31 to Concordia's 29 total. The Saints also recorded 14 assists while Concordia only dished out nine. The Cardinals edged out AQ in steals (6-3) and blocks (4-3).Â
The Saints were led by Marissa Brady, who notched her eighth double-double in nine games, recording 22 points (9-13 shooting) and 11 rebounds. Brady also had all three blocks for AQ. Jaylynn Williams tallied nine points with a pair of rebounds and a pair of assists.
JaKarri Alven finished with eight points, shooting 5-6 from the free throw line and added a pair of assists. Brighton Miller totaled five points, dished out two assists, and notched four rebounds for the Saints. Daz'Sha Day added six points and two assists. Jayda Smith finished with four points and three rebounds in the contest.
AQ is back in action Wednesday, Feb. 17th as the Saints try to grab their third consecutive win, hosting the Blue Devils of Lawrence Tech. The big WHAC matchup is set to start at 5:30 PM in the Sturrus Center.
