The Aquinas men's volleyball team lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to visiting #14 Goshen on Friday night (Feb. 19) in the Sturrus Center. The WHAC counterparts alternated wins in the first four sets before the Maple Leafs prevailed with a 15-12 victory in the decisive fifth set.
With the result, AQ – which was receiving votes nationally in the most recent NAIA Top-15 poll – drops to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in WHAC play. Goshen improves to 9-4 on the season and 3-1 in league action. The Maple Leafs won the earlier meeting by a 3-1 score on Jan. 27 in Indiana.
Aquinas was much better offensively than Goshen, as the Saints hit .194 with 56 kills. The Maple Leafs hit .167 and registered 39 kills. AQ also led in digs (49-39), assists (56-38), and teams were tied in blocks (8-8). Goshen held a slight 11-9 edge in aces.
Julian Armendano posted a match-high and a career-high 23 kills and hit a stellar .436, along with seven digs, four aces, and two blocks. Matthew Glass notched 10 kills and four blocks, while hitting .389. Robert Valerio supplied eight kills, four digs, and a pair of rejections.
Kelsey Yogi picked up a match-high 14 digs and passed for seven assists. Leo-Paul Rousseau recorded a 47-assist, 10-dig double-double and Josh Evers nabbed seven digs. Sean Kelley chipped in five kills and three block assists, while Daniel Littleton provided five kills, four blocks, and a pair of aces.
Goshen won sets one and three, while Aquinas took sets two and four, setting up the pivotal fifth frame. The Saints raced out to a 4-0 lead on kills from Armendano and Littleton and combined blocks from Valerio-Littleton and Kelley-Littleton. It was 6-2 after a Littleton ace, but Goshen scored the next four points to tie the set.
Glass put down a kill for the 7-6 AQ lead, but the Maple Leafs scored the next four points to lead 10-7. Another Glass kill made it 11-9 in GC's favor. After a Goshen error and a Valerio kill, it was 14-12, but the Maple Leafs used one final kill to end the set and the match.
AQ is off until next Friday (Feb. 26) when the Saints head to Fort Wayne to take on Indiana Tech at 5:00 p.m.
