Five AQ players scored for the Saints women's hockey team on Friday night (Feb. 19) against Davenport, as Aquinas remained unbeaten early in the 2021 season. The Saints scored twice in both the first and third periods to earn the 5-0 victory over the crosstown rival Panthers.
AQ improves to 2-0-1 on the season and have outscored their three opponents by a 12-3 margin in those outings. Davenport drops to 1-2 in 2021. The teams were scheduled to play again on Saturday night (Feb. 20), but that game has been cancelled and rescheduled for March 7th at 7:20 p.m.
Less than four minutes into the game, Olivia Menard found the back of the net on a feed from Avery Martin for the early 1-0 lead. AQ would double its advantage at the 4:28 mark of the first period, as Alexandra Drevline made it 2-0 on a tally from both Mikayla Oppermann and Alyssa Buzar.
The lead grew to 3-0 at the 8:29 mark in the second period, as Morgan Kozar scored off a pass from Bridget Clay. It would remain a three-goal game until the third period, as Amelia Bartels made it 4-0 with a shorthanded goal at the 14:02 mark. Oppermann tallied the game's final goal, scoring with 11:38 remaining in the contest.
Despite the lopsided final score, Aquinas only outshot Davenport, 38-31.
Freshman goalkeeper Kadynce Romijn stopped all 31 shots she faced, turning in her first collegiate shutout for the Saints.
AQ hosts a pair of home games next weekend at Southside Ice Arena. The Saints take on Lake Superior State on Friday night (Feb. 26) and Saturday afternoon (Feb. 27).
