AQ Men Drop Hard Fought 57-50 Game at Rochester

The Aquinas men's basketball team traveled to Rochester Hills, Michigan to take on the conference leader Rochester in a huge WHAC matchup on Sunday evening (Feb. 21). The Saints weren't able to close out the contest as the Warriors earned the win by a 57-50 score. The Warriors remain on top in the WHAC advancing to 10-2 overall and 9-1 in conference.

Rochester started out hot going on a 13-1 run on the visiting Saints. AQ quickly bounced back rattling off a 19-6 run of their own taking the lead 20-19. It was a battle the rest of the way as the Warriors and the Saints tied eight times and had 12 lead changes in the contest. 

The Saints trailed by a bucket (52-50) in the final minute of the game. The Warriors then tallied the last five points, including a crucial old-fashioned three-point play, clinching the win. AQ moves to 4-9 overall record and are 4-8 in the WHAC.

AQ led the Warriors in shooting percentage (38%) as Rochester finished shooting 37% as a team. The Saints shot 31.6% from downtown and held the home Warriors to a 23.1% from beyond the three-point line. 

The Warriors out-rebounded Aquinas (34-26) and were dominant in the paint notching a 24-12 scoring advantage inside the key. The Saints were 6-8 from the charity stripe as the Warriors shot 11-18 from the foul line.

Sammie Ryans led Aquinas with a game-high 18 points, shooting 7-15 and added five rebounds. Deric Murray posted nine points for the Saints. Menalito McGee went 3-5 from the field, finishing with eight points.

Trevor Ballard went 3-4 with a triple to total eight points and added a pair of rebounds. Justin Lary recorded five points and five rebounds for AQ. Gabe Overway added five rebounds.

Aquinas and Rochester each tallied 11 assists in the game and each team notched five blocks. The Warriors grabbed the advantage in steals (6-4) but recorded 17 turnovers to AQ's 15 total.

The Saints are back in action Tuesday (Feb. 23) as AQ hosts the Crusaders of Madonna in the last regular season game. The big WHAC showdown is set for 8:00 PM inside the Sturrus Center.
