The Aquinas men's volleyball team traveled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Saturday night (Feb. 27) to take on the Wolves of Cardinal Stritch, who are receiving national votes, in a big non-conference matchup. The Saints were unable to grab the win as the Wolves took the match in four sets by scores of 25-21, 20-25, 28-26, and 25-19.
The Wolves hit .423 in the first set against the Saints. Aquinas was able to battle back in the second game, hitting .240 as a team. Despite the Saints totaling 19 kills in set three, Cardinal Stritch closed out the match with wins in set three and four. The loss moves AQ to 3-6 overall and the win advances Cardinal Stritch to a 7-1 record.Â
The Saints hit .203 as a team, finishing with 51 kills in the match. Cardinal Stritch hit .217 while totaling 47 kills. Aquinas and the Wolves were even in blocks (8) while Cardinal Stritch edged Aquinas in digs (51-43) and service aces (5-4). AQ took the advantage in assists (48-42).
Julian Armendano led Aquinas with 16 kills and hit a .237 average. Armendano also tallied a team-high 12 digs and had two block assists for the Saints. Daniel Littleton posted nine kills, hitting .400, and added six block assists and four digs.
Matthew Richmond dished out 38 assists while finishing with four digs. Josh Evers finished with nine digs in the match. Robert Valerio added nine kills, hit .240, and totaled four digs and three block assists. Gavin Jonker recorded seven kills, seven digs, and two block assists. Sean Kelley tallied four kills for the Saints.Â
Aquinas returns to the court on Tuesday (Mar. 2) as the Saints travel to Chicago, Illinois to face the Cougars of Saint Xavier in another non-conference contest. The match is set to begin at 7:00 PM ET.
