The Aquinas men's volleyball team traveled to Chicago, Illinois to face #11 Saint Xavier in a big non-conference matchup on Tuesday night (Mar. 2). The Saints fell short to the Cougars, dropping in three sets by scores of 25-17, 26-24, and 26-19.
AQ got off to a slow start in the match, hitting -.167 as a team allowing the Cougars to take the first set by a score of 25-17. The Saints battled back in the second going back-and-forth with the Cougars sharing 17 ties in the second game, and tied the set at 24-24. Saint Xavier notched the last two points to close out the set.
The Saints were unable to grab the third set dropping 25-19. The loss moves Aquinas to 3-7 overall and advances the Cougars to a 14-1 overall record.
The Cougars led AQ in kills, totaling 40 as a team and hitting a .218 percentage. Aquinas only finished with 22 kills and hit .068. Saint Xavier also grabbed the advantage in assists (37-20) and digs (33-22). Both the Saints and the Cougars tallied seven team blocks.
Aquinas was led by Gavin Jonker who totaled seven kills and four digs. Jonker also tallied two block assists. Leo-Paul Rousseau dished out 15 assists for the Saints and added six digs.
Josh Evers finished with six digs and AQ's only service ace while Matthew Glass recorded four block assists. Daniel Littleton totaled three kills and had a pair of block assists. Julian Armendano posted five kills and Robert Valerio tallied three.
AQ returns to the court to take on the #10 Gray Wolves of Lourdes in a huge WHAC showdown. First serve is scheduled for 5:00 PM in Sylvania, Ohio.
