The Aquinas women's tennis team nearly upended NCAA Division II opponent Davenport in Saturday's (Feb. 7) season opener at the MVP Sportsplex. While AQ won three singles competitions, the Panthers also won three singles and earned the doubles point for the decisive 4-3 victory.
It was the opening match for each team in the 2021 campaign. Davenport is 1-0, while AQ drops to 0-1.
The doubles team of Vanessa Heylmun and Sara Forletta won at #3 doubles, 6-3, while Darci TerHaar and Kiara Berry fell in a tight 7-6 set at #2 doubles. Davenport also won the #1 doubles matchup for the important one point in the match.
Sofia Gomez emerged victorious at #2 singles, 7-5, 3-6, and 10-2. TerHaar bounced back from a first set loss to win 1-6, 7-6, and 10-8 in #3 singles. Berry had a near victory at #4 singles, falling 7-5, 4-6, and 9-11.
The Saints' other victory came from Forletta at #6 singles. She won in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-2.
Aquinas will host Indiana Wesleyan next Saturday (Feb. 13) at MVP Sportsplex in the official AQ home opener.
