The Aquinas men's hockey team hosted Cleary in a big WHAC contest at Southside Ice Arena on Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 10). The Saints dominated the Cougars, outscoring Cleary by a 8-2 score. AQ advances their win streak to four and improves to a 7-5 overall record, 5-2 WHAC.
The Saints and the Cougars battled the first period, remaining almost scoreless before AQ's Trent Kulczyk netted the first goal with 20 seconds left in the period (assisted by Brandon Schwandt and Mason Stewart). That goal put some fuel in the Aquinas offense as the Saints came out in the second period outscoring the Cougars four goals to one.
Aquinas headed into the locker room after the second period leading 5-1. AQ kept the momentum going once they returned to the ice, scoring two more goals. Cleary responded with a goal making it 7-2, Aquinas advantage. With 23 seconds left in the contest, Kulczyk netted another goal to complete the hat-trick and the game. Cleary drops to 1-7 overall, 1-7 WHAC.
AQ was led by Kulczyck with three goals. Ryan Wolfe neared a hat-trick with two goals and added an assist. Brandon Rozema finished with a goal and assisted three.
Stewart posted one goal and two assists. Alex Klekotka netted one goal and had one assist. Darren Johnson had two assists for the Saints.
The Saints outshot the Cougars 50-22, with AQ goalkeeper, Roman Malkov, totaling 20 saves with two goals allowed.
Aquinas is back on the ice on Friday afternoon (Mar. 12) for a rescheduled WHAC matchup against Concordia. Puck drop against the Cardinals is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Southside Ice Arena.
