The Aquinas women's soccer team posted a statement victory on Friday (Mar. 12) in Rossford, Ohio, as the Saints upended #11 UNOH by a 3-0 shutout. Listed in the 'Receiving Votes' section of the most recent Coaches Top-25 poll, Aquinas took down the #11 Racers with a goal in the opening minutes of the game and two more second-half tallies.
UNOH was selected to win the WHAC Championship in the Coaches' Preseason Poll last September, with Aquinas picked to finish in second place. Friday's victory keeps AQ undefeated in WHAC play at 4-0; the Saints are 6-1 overall in 2021. UNOH drops its second straight game and the Racers fall to 2-2 overall and 2-2 in league action.
The Saints scored in the opening minutes, with Ariana Garcia putting the visitors ahead 1-0 on a feed from Sydney Shenk at the 2:31 mark. It was a terrific start for AQ, as the Saints would hold that lead until halftime. There were just eight shots in the opening half, with Aquinas holding a 5-3 edge in that category.
More than 10 minutes into the second half, the Saints struck again. Macy Hollingsworth scored at 56:32 on a header to make it 2-0, with Hannah Crum credited with the assist. The lead stayed 2-0 until the 75:43 mark, when Katelyn Kahael sent a cross into the box and over a teammate's head, but the ball clipped off the inside of the post and into the net for the third and final goal.
There were so few opportunities in the game, with only 14 total shots – AQ led that category, 9-5. The Saints also took all five shots on goal, scoring on three of them. UNOH led Aquinas in corners (4-3) and fouls (6-3).
Hollingsworth attempted four shots (two on goal) and Shenk added a pair of attempts. With UNOH not being credited with a single shot on goal, AQ goalie Braeleigh McCoy did not need to make a single save to earn the shutout victory.
The Saints return home for a 7:00 p.m. game next Wednesday (Mar. 17) against Cornerstone at the AQ Athletic Field.
