Hill’s Gem Helps AQ Baseball Split With Trinity Christian

Saints win game one 6-0 before Trolls take nightcap 3-2

The Aquinas baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader in Crestwood, Ill. on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 13) with Trinity Christian. AQ took the opening game by a 6-0 final thanks to a terrific performance from pitcher Mason Hill, while the Trolls nabbed the nightcap by a 3-2 final.

With the split, Aquinas is 8-5 on the year, as Trinity Christian is 5-9 overall. AQ heads back to Crestwood on Sunday (Mar. 14) for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch against Saint Ambrose (Iowa).

Hill – the reigning WHAC Pitcher of the Week – proved why in Saturday's opener, tossing a complete game four-hitter. He needed just 86 pitches to move to 2-0 on the season. Hill did not walk a batter and struck out four Trolls.

After striking out the side in the first, Hill retired the first 11 batters he faced until a two-out infield single in the fourth inning. He induced 10 outs in the air during his second straight impressive start.

AQ gave Hill plenty of run support, recording 12 hits and scoring in three innings. Colton Vanderleest hit a solo homer in the second inning and the Saints scored three times in the third, with Alec Lockwood (double) and Vanderleest (single) each driving in a run. Nick Brzezinski added an RBI single in the sixth and Brady Paganelli brought in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Michael Maher finished 3-for-4, while Vanderleest was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Brzezinski was also 2-for-3 and Braden Nawrocki scored twice.

Aquinas went up 2-0 in game two on a Dane Smitz RBI single and a Nawrocki sacrifice fly to score Smitz for the early lead. Trinity Christian tied the score with a two-run third inning and used a go-ahead RBI single in the seventh to move in front, 3-2. AQ put the tying runner on base in the seventh, but left him stranded on a game-ending flyout.

Each team had six hits in game two. Paganelli went 2-for-3 with a triple in the loss.

Ben Snider allowed two runs on five hits in four innings on the bump. Dawson Rabb was dealt the loss, though he gave up just one run on one hit in three innings of relief. He walked three batters and struck out two Trolls.
