The Aquinas women's lacrosse team hosted Madonna in the Saints' second matchup of the year on Saturday morning (Mar. 13). AQ's scoring runs earned the Saints the 16-12 victory over the Crusaders, improving to 1-1 on the year.
The Saints got off to an early lead, netting the first three goals of the contest all on free position shots by Kennadie Minerich (man up), Alyssa Chartier, and Cierra Davis. Madonna went a 3-0 scoring run themselves, tying the game at 3-3.
AQ and the Crusaders battled back and forth before heading in the locker room with the Saints having a 6-5 advantage. Aquinas came out of the half firing, going on another scoring run. AQ rattled off an 8-1 scoring run to give the Saints the 14-6 lead.
Madonna was able to battle back after a 6-2 run, but couldn't close the gap as AQ grabbed the 16-12 win. Madonna drops to 0-1 to start their 2021 season.
Davis led the Saints with an impressive team-high four goals and five assists. Lauren Hansen tallied two goals and an assist. Hansen also finished with three ground balls. Chartier posted two goals on the day and added three ground balls for AQ.
Katelyn Hall finished with two goals. Naomi Plant totaled a goal and two assists. Minerich tallied a goal, an assist, and four ground balls. Tallying a goal each were Megan Moffat and Alex Sullivan. Carli Taylor finished with three ground balls, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers.
The Saints goalie Azariah Wells earned the win and posted 17 saves in the contest.
Aquinas will take the field again on Wednesday (Mar. 17) as the Saints host Benedictine in another non-conference showdown. The game is scheduled for 4:00 PM at the AQ Athletic Field.
