The Aquinas baseball team earned a split on Sunday afternoon (Mar. 7) in a non-conference twinbill against Lawrence Tech at the Corner Ballpark in Detroit. Aquinas scored late in game one to win 3-0, but LTU prevailed in the nightcap to notch the 4-3 victory and split the doubleheader.

AQ's win streak reached five games in a row after Sunday's opening win. The game two loss snapped the streak, but the Saints are still 5-2 in 2021. Sunday's games were the first for Lawrence Tech this year, as the Blue Devils are now 1-1.

The teams will square off again in Detroit on Monday (Mar. 8) at 4:30 p.m. to complete the four-game series.

Neither team crossed the plate in the first five innings of the opener. AQ broke the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth on a
Nick Brzezinski two-run homer that also scored pinch hitter
Sean Wing. In the seventh, Colton Vanderleest pinch hit for Wing and delivered a two-out RBI single to score
Michael Maher, who singled earlier in the frame.
That was more than enough offense for the Saints pitching staff, which allowed just three hits on the day.
Mason Hill threw five innings of three-hit ball to tally the victory. He did not issue a walk and struck out three batters.
Hunter Morrison and
Grant Smitz each tossed a hitless inning of relief, with Smitz tallying three strikeouts and earning the save.

Dane Smitz,
Chris Suriel Garcia, and
Dane Smitz all collected two hits, with Brzezinski totaling a pair of RBI on his first homerun of the season.

Vanderleest put AQ ahead 2-0 in the first inning of game two with a double to score Maher and
Brady Paganelli. Lawrence Tech answered with two runs in the home half of the first and tacked on single runs in the second and third innings.

Maher made it 4-3 in the seventh with an RBI groundout to score
Alex Strickland. The Saints loaded the bases with two outs, but a swinging strikeout ended the game.

Lawrence Tech outhit AQ by an 8-5 margin. Vanderleest notched two RBI with his double. Five Saints recorded one hit each in the nightcap.

Ben Snider logged four innings on the hill and gave up four runs on seven hits.
Nathan Myers struck out three batters and gave up just one hit in two scoreless innings of relief.
