The Aquinas women's volleyball traveled to Rochester Hills, Michigan for a two-game road trip on Saturday night (Mar. 6). The Saints first faced Rochester in a WHAC matchup before taking on #17 Bethel in a huge non-conference contest. AQ earned two big wins, extending its win streak to 12 and advancing the Saints to a 15-1 overall record and 8-1 WHAC record.
In the first match against Rochester, the Saints jumped to a quick 11-7 lead. AQ then rattled off nine consecutive points, extending the lead to 20-7 in the first set. Aquinas remained in control for all three sets sweeping the Warriors by scores of 25-16, 25-15, and 25-8.
AQ was led by senior Payton Klein who totaled 11 kills on just 12 swings with only one error, hitting an incredible .833 percentage. Klein also added seven digs and four service aces. Kali Crawford posted 26 assists and eight digs for the Saints.
Jackie Rozell recorded six kills, four service aces, two block assists, and 13 digs. Adrien Yondo finished with 19 digs and a service ace. Emily Jones totaled three kills and three total blocks. Kenzi Dobosiewicz added three kills, hitting .375 and had six digs. Samee Teachworth posted five kills with no errors and two total blocks.
Aquinas dominated the Warriors on the stat sheet notching the advantage in kills (36-14), assists (32-12), and digs (58-41). The Saints also led Rochester in total blocks (5-2). Rochester drops to 3-13 overall and are 0-11 in WHAC play.
In the second match against Bethel, the Saints remained hot, hitting .275 as a team to the Pilots' .114 team percentage in the first set. AQ took the first set by a 25-22 score.Â
Despite dropping the second set 25-19, Aquinas quickly bounced back. The third set went back-and-forth between the Pilots and the Saints with AQ having a 23-19 advantage late. Bethel scored the next five points, taking a 24-23 lead over Aquinas. The Saints responded with a kill from Meredith Kraus to even the score at 24-24.
Alternating points, Bethel and AQ tied the ball game at 27-27 before kills from Jones and Rozell clinched the third set win (29-27). Aquinas hit .296 to Bethel's .030 team percentage in the fourth set earning the Saints the win, 25-19. Bethel falls to a 22-5 overall record.Â
Klein also led AQ in the second match, totaling a match-high 18 kills and hit .412. Klein added 13 digs and had two total blocks. Rozell finished with 17 kills and 11 digs for the Saints. Rozell also posted six total blocks (three block solos and three block assists). Crawford dished out 37 assists and added four kills of her own and had 18 digs.
Jones posted an impressive seven block total (five solo blocks and two block assists) and added six kills for AQ. Yondo came up with another 19 digs for the Saints. Kylie Christensen tallied seven kills while Kraus finished with six.
The Saints and Pilots were even on the stat sheet aside from AQ notching the huge advantage at the net, totaling 14 team blocks to Bethel's six block total.
Aquinas is back in play Tuesday night (Mar. 9) as the Saints return to the Sturrus Center to host Madonna in a big WHAC showdown. The match against the Crusaders is set for 7:00 PM.
