The Aquinas baseball team faced the Concordia Cardinals in a big WHAC doubleheader on Sunday afternoon (Apr. 11) at WMSC Sports Complex. The Saints scored just two in the first game, leaving eight players on base. In game two, Concordia's strong bats late earned the Cardinals two wins over AQ. The pair of losses move Aquinas to 16-16 overall, 1-7 WHAC.
In game one, it wasn't a lack of hitting for the Saints as AQ totaled 10 hits. Aquinas tallied a run in the fourth inning on a single from Dane Smitz, scoring Sean Wing who doubled. Another score for AQ didn't come again until the ninth as Michael Maher singled to score Chris Suriel Garcia, who also doubled.
Concordia tallied six runs in the game on 12 hits and no errors for AQ. Mason Hill (2-2) was given the loss on the mound for Aquinas, pitching six innings and totaling three strikeouts. Nathan Hughes, Brady Paganelli, and Maher all led the Saints hitting 2-4.
In game two, Aquinas grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second inning as Nick Brzezinski hit a sacrifice fly to score Jacob Ramont (singled to right center). A throwing error by Concordia on a ground ball scored Alex Strickland from second to make it 2-0 AQ advantage.
The Cardinals tallied a run in the top of the fourth to bring it within one run. A solo home run to right center field from Strickland in the bottom of the fourth increased the lead back up to two runs.
Concordia came back to post six runs on six hits and no errors in the top of the fifth to go up four. A four-run inning for the Cardinals in the seventh and three more runs in the ninth earned them the 14-3 victory. The pair of wins improves CUAA to 24-11 overall and 8-2 in WHAC play.
Conor Gausselin (0-2) was given the loss on the mound for AQ. Starter Nathan Myers pitched four innings, allowed three runs and finished with a strikeout. Bruce Buurstra also added two strikeouts.
Strickland hit 2-3 in game two with a home run, two runs, and an RBI. Hughes hit 1-2 while third baseman Suriel Garcia finished hitting 1-3. Pinch hitters Max Vicari and Lorenzo Cupri each hit 1-1 with singles.
The Saints return to play on Tuesday (Apr. 13) as AQ hosts Lawrence Tech in a big WHAC doubleheader at the WMSC Sports Complex. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM.
