The Aquinas men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought overtime game to #16 UNOH in the WHAC Tournament semifinals on Wednesday evening (Apr. 14) in Lima, Ohio. After AQ took the early 1-0 lead, the top-20 Racers tied the score in the second half and tallied the game-winner five minutes into the extra session.
It was a great battle between two of the top teams in the WHAC, both vying for a berth in the WHAC Championship. The win puts second-seed UNOH at 10-2 on the season, while third-seeded Aquinas drops to 10-3 overall. Two of AQ's three losses this season have come at UNOH and both were by just one goal apiece, including a 1-0 regular season defeat on Mar. 19.
The Saints did a terrific job of staying in the game and forcing overtime despite UNOH owning a large 26-5 advantage in total shots and a 9-2 edge in shots on goal. Aquinas starting keeper
Antonio Strassioto made six saves in net. The Racers also led 10-3 in corners.
It was a physical game, with 20 total fouls (11 on UNOH, 9 on AQ) and six yellow cards (four on the Racers, two on the Saints).
AQ struck first, after the Saints earned a penalty kick in the 12th minute.
Andrea Ghiggini took the attempt for Aquinas at the 11:59 mark and put it past the UNOH keeper for his third goal of the season. The Saints would not record another shot in the opening 45 minutes but led at halftime despite UNOH outshooting AQ, 13-2.
The Racers controlled possession for the early part of the second half, which resulted with UNOH netting the equalizer at the 58:59 mark on a shot from 20 yards out to tie the score. Both teams would have a few chances the rest of the second half, but the game would go to overtime tied at 1-1.
The only shot of the extra session was the game-winner, as the Racers earned the golden goal at the 94:36 mark. UNOH will face top-seeded Indiana Tech in Saturday's championship game.
Jasper Schinkel tallied three of AQ's five shots, with Ghiggini and
Fin Pittock taking one apiece, both of which were shots on goal.
The Saints will now await their NAIA Nationals fate and a possible berth in the national tournament.
