The Aquinas softball team plated 24 runs on 22 hits in a WHAC doubleheader sweep of Lawrence Tech on Wednesday (Apr. 14) at Cornerstone. AQ won a wild game one, using a ninth-inning, three-run, walk-off homer from
Darrien Roberts before earning a mercy rule victory in game two over the Blue Devils.
AQ took the opener by a 9-8 score in nine innings and the Saints completed the sweep with a 15-7 victory, which included two homers in each contest.
With the wins, AQ extends its win streak to six straight games; the Saints have swept their last three WHAC doubleheaders and sits atop the league standings. Aquinas is now 17-5 on the season and 9-1 in WHAC play, while Lawrence Tech falls to 7-8 overall and 2-4 in conference action.
The Saints started things early with a five-run first inning in the opener.
Kallie Sears registered an RBI double and
Jordan Humitz delivered a two-run single for the early 3-0 lead. Current WHAC Player of the Week
Courtney Hardin continued her tear with a two-run homer to left field and a 5-0 AQ advantage.
Lawrence Tech battled back and chipped away at the deficit, tying the game at 5-5 in the fifth. A
Leigha Morse RBI single in the home half of the fifth put Aquinas back on top, 6-5. AQ tried to close things out in the seventh, but the Blue Devils tied the score at 6-6 and eventually forced extra innings.
LTU scored twice in the top of the ninth and appeared to be in control. After back-to-back singles from
Izzy Dawson and Humitz put the tying runners on base, Roberts ended the game with a walk-off three-run homer to right center for the 9-8 win.
Humitz went 2-for-5 with two RBI, Roberts drove in three runs, and Hardin scored twice and drove in a pair of runs. Dawson went 1-for-3 with two walks.
Kayla Fessenden (6-0) earned the win with four innings of relief, allowing three runs (one earned) and striking out three.
In game two, Humitz hit a two-run homer to right field and helped AQ build an early 4-1 lead in the first. Humitz added an RBI single in the second inning and Morse brought home two runs with a single for a 7-2 advantage.
Humitz kept up her strong doubleheader with a three-run roundtripper to center field for a 10-2 Aquinas lead in the fourth. On the brink of a mercy rule, AQ allowed five LTU runs in the top of the fifth, but responded with five runs of its own in the home half of the inning. The Saints finished the game thanks to a two-run double from Dawson and a two-run single from
Brooke Wila.
Humitz went 4-for-4 with two homers, three runs, and six RBI. Dawson was 2-for-3 with two ribbies and three runs, while
Kallie Sears also scored three times and walked twice. Morse collected two hits and two RBI, Hardin added two hits and two runs and Wila notched a pair of RBI.
Leah Vaughan (3-2) earned the victory, allowing three earned runs in four innings.
AQ begins an eight-game road swing this weekend, as the Saints head to Madonna on Saturday (Apr. 17) for a noon start against the Crusaders.
