The Aquinas softball team traveled to Livonia, Michigan to take on Madonna in a huge WHAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon (Apr. 17). AQ fell in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one on a walkoff single (4-3) and dropped in game two by a 6-2 score. Aquinas moves to a 17-7 overall record, 9-3 WHAC.
Both teams were scoreless in the first three innings of game one. Madonna cracked open the scoring in the bottom of the fourth tallying two. AQ responded in the top of the fifth as the Saints grabbed the lead by scoring Natalie VanDerHaegen, Sydney Dawson, and Brooke Wila.
The Crusaders scored on a walk in and tied the game at three a piece in the bottom of the seventh. Madonna grabbed the win on a walk-off base hit to right field.
Pitcher Kayla Fessenden pitched three innings and started on the mound for AQ. Reliever Leah Ash also pitched three innings and just one of her two runs allowed were earned. Ash also posted two strikeouts. The Saints were led by Wila who hit 3-4 with one run, one RBI, and three stolen bases. Izzy Dawson notched a double in the game. VanDerHaegen and Courtney Hardin each tallied a single.
In game two, Madonna earned the jump tallying two runs in the bottom of the second. AQ was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning. With bases loaded, I. Dawson singled to left field scoring Wila and S. Dawson to tie the game at two.
Madonna matched the two runs in the bottom of the fifth to grab the two run advantage. The Crusaders tallied two more in the sixth to earn the win as AQ was scoreless in the top of the seventh. The wins moved MU to a 17-5 overall record, 6-2 WHAC.
Leah Vaughan started game two for the Saints, pitching 4.2 innings and totaled four strikeouts. Wila also led AQ in game two hitting 2-3 with two singles and a run. I. Dawson earned two RBIs on her single in the fifth. Also notching a hit for Aquinas was Kaelyn Stafford, Darrien Roberts, and S. Dawson.
The Saints return to play tomorrow (Apr. 18) as AQ remains on the road taking on UM-Dearborn in another WHAC doubleheader. First pitch against the Wolverines is set for 1:00 PM in Dearborn, Michigan.
